Queen Letizia of Spain and Mathilde of Belgium meet in Brussels

Queen Letizia of Spain and Mathilde of Belgium meet in Brussels

As queen consorts of their respective countries, they are both known for their impeccable royal wardrobes.

And Queen Letizia of Spain certainly didn't disappoint as she joined Queen Mathilde of Belgium at the opening ceremony of the European Development Days in Brussels on Tuesday.

The annual event brings together members of the development community from around the world, with this year's installment focusing on empowering women in leadership positions.

Letizia, 45, put on a typically stylish display in a red ensemble, while Mathilde, also 45, opted for pale pastel colours as they posed for pictures together.

Letizia showed off her slim silhouette in a scarlet-coloured trouser suit, making the most of her endless legs and toned waist.

The royal teamed the two-piece with matching red pumps and a clutch bag, completing her look with crimson lipstick and coordinating ruby earrings.

Wearing her hair in a relaxed centre parting, she chatted happily with Mathilde along with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Meanwhile Mathilde opted for more neutral colours, teaming a champagne-pink skirt embellished with leopard print with a semi-sheer high neck chiffon blouse.

The Belgian royal, who recently returned from a tour to the Netherlands, coordinated it with matching nude pumps and wore her hair in loose waves.

She was joined by the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica as they posed for photographers.

Later, both Queen Letizia and Queen Mathilde took to the stage to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony for the European Development Days.

The organisation focuses on a number of charity projects, and this year one of their campaigns aims to focus on promoting a safer, more inclusive and open world for women.

Queen Mathilde has been married to King Phillipe of Belgium for 19 years, who ascended the throne following the abdication of his father, King Albert II, on 21 July 2013.

They are parents to Princess Elisabeth, 16, Prince Gabriel, 14, Prince Emmanuel, 12, Princess Eleonore, 10.

Queen Letizia is mother to Princesses Leonor, 12, and Sofia, 10, with husband King Felipe, 50, who ascended to the Spanish throne in 2014.

Over the years Letizia, a former newsreader, has worked hard to promote causes she is passionate about.

These include education, innovation, rare diseases, and particularly in nutrition, working closely with the UN’s World Health and Food and Agriculture Organisations.
