The Duchess of Sussex has been crowned Britain's top social climber by society magazine Tatler after it said she had reached 'the pinnacle of the greasy pole'.



Describing her 'A-list ascent' to royalty, the magazine writes: 'The Ralph and Russo-clad beacon of change has found a role that suits her to perfection: A tungsten toughie to drag the Royal Family into the 21st century.'



Following the duchess, 38, in Tatler's list of social climbers, which appears in its October edition on sale today, is Commons Speaker John Bercow.



Model Jerry Hall is in third place. The 63-year-old is praised for her rise from the daughter of an alcoholic Texan trucker to partner of Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger – topping it off with her marriage to billionaire media magnate Rupert Murdoch.



Others on the list include Turner Prize-winning artist Keith Tyson, who married Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth, and new John Lewis chairman Sharon White.

Meghan was said by Tatler to have reached 'the pinnacle of the greasy pole' as it crowned her Britain's top social climber.

The Duchess has previously been labelled a social climber by broadcaster Piers Morgan and even estranged members of her family.



In an interview with Australian television in March, Mr Morgan said: 'Although some people really like her I'm afraid I see a bit of hard-nosed actress.



'She's been using people on her way up to what is now, of course, the top, which is marrying into the royal family.



Mr Morgan alleged he and the former 'Suits' star, 38, were friends back in 2016 before she married Prince Harry in May 2018 and officially became a member of the royal family.



He recalled: 'I had a couple of pints of real ale and she had dirty martinis. She said afterward in the cab, 'I had a great time. Love to see you again.'







'It was purely platonic I hasten to add. She went in that cab that night to a party Prince Harry was at and the next night she went on the date with him.



'I never heard from her again. Ever. I don't like people that behave like that. It's kind of rude. It showed me that she, I'm afraid, is probably a bit of a social climber.'



The broadcaster said the Duchess 'social climbed her way out of his orbit' and 'seized her chance and acted her way to the top'.



Meghan's estranged sister Samantha Grant has claimed becoming a princess was Meghan's 'ambition'.



Speaking in 2018, Miss Grant said: 'Hollywood has changed her. I think her ambition is to become a princess… it was something she dreamed of as a girl when we watched the royals on TV.'



Meanwhile, royal biographer Andrew Morton has claimed the Duchess's split from first husband Trevor Engelson came off the back of her acting career sky-rocketing.
