The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have transformed their previously strict Instagram style, with a social media expert claiming it could be a bid to get 'noticed' more.

Meghan, 38, and Prince Harry, 34, have maintained a very specific format with their posts since launching the Sussex Royal account in April, frequently sharing square images with a white border.

However, over the past week the couple have started sharing rectangular posts - sparking some to speculate whether it's a move to generate 'higher engagement' on their page.

Tom Jacobs, head of advertising at marketing agency Distract, told FEMAIL the blatant shift in display on Instagram is indeed 'interesting'.

'[The rectangle] takes up more screen room which means it's a longer swipe physically with the thumb to get past content,' he observed.

'The logic here is, if it takes up more space, it's more likely to get noticed.

'Instagram is learning from what they did with the stories element of the platform, which takes up the whole screen. This means users are only focusing on one thing at a time, which means they have your undivided attention.

'It's a natural move for the platform and it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference.'

Royal reporter Elizabeth Holmes speculated about the shift on her own page, writing: 'So many of you reached out to say that vertical images can lead to higher engagement because they fill up your phone screen (while pushing down comments and like tallies).'

Elizabeth questioned the reason for Harry and Meghan altering their Instagram shape, asking: 'There is no reason this quote needs to be in a vertical rectangle... so obviously I want to know why it's a vertical rectangle! What is behind the switch??'

The SussexRoyal account has always featured squares with a slick, white frame that give it a stylised look, in contrast to Prince William and Kate Middleton's account.

Prince Harry and Meghan have regularly posted images of themselves at engagements, and recently started sharing quotes from inspirational figures in white writing on a navy background featuring their monogram.

But three of the couple's post recent posts on the @SussexRoyal Instagram account have been shared as rectangles, rather than the usual traditional square format.

This has included images from Prince Harry's most recent engagement in Amsterdam earlier this week, and an inspirational quote from Nelson Mandela shared on Monday.

It was reported earlier this month that Prince Harry and Meghan had recruited online whizz David Watkins, who had previously worked for fashion designer Burberry, as their new communications expert.

A royal source told The Sun: 'Harry and Meghan want to conquer the world and they want to do it through the prism of social media to really connect with their followers.

'David is the perfect person to help them do this.'

Although officials are keen to play down any rivalry with the Cambridges, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have attracted a staggering 9.4 million followers since they launched their Instagram page in April - only 300,000 fewer than William and Kate, who joined in 2015.

The Sussexes' online enthusiasm has caused surprise as Harry previously claimed social media was more addictive than drugs or alcohol.

Meghan was, on the other hand, enthralled by social media while she was still an actress. She would often share lifestyle posts and recipes on Instagram alongside images of her home and gatherings with friends.

Early in her relationship with Harry, she shared a cryptic photo of spooning bananas on the social media site, which many followers interpreted as a reference to her then burgeoning romance.

Towards the latter half of last year, Harry and Meghan took greater control of their social media output when they shared photos they had personally taken on the Kensington Palace feed.
