Hurricane Dorian's center is moving parallel to Florida's northeastern coast as its outer bands threaten the Sunshine State with torrential rains and tropical storm-force winds.

The storm's maximum sustained winds Wednesday morning are near 105mph, making it a Category 2 storm.

Dorian is centered about 90 miles east-northeast of Daytona Beach, Florida, and is moving about 9mph, just a day after it devastated the Bahamas.

The storm is expected to produce 5 to 10 inches of rain in the Coastal Carolinas, 3 to 6 inches along the Atlantic Coast from Daytona Beach, Florida to the Georgia-South Carolina line and 3 to 6 inches in southeast Virginia.

There are also areas in the Carolinas that may get up to 15 inches of rain and parts of Georgia may receive 9 inches.

'This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods,' the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned Wednesday morning.

According to the NHC, a turn toward the north is forecast by this evening, followed by a turn toward the north-northeast on Thursday morning.

'On this track, the core of Hurricane Dorian will move dangerously close to the Florida east coast and the Georgia coast through tonight,' the NHC said.

The center of Dorian is forecast to move near or over the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina Thursday through Friday morning.

Forecasters said that the hurricane is expected to weaken during the next couple of days.

'However, Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days,' the center said.

Hurricane and storm surge warnings are being extended as Hurricane Dorian crawls up a path parallel to the East Coast.

A storm surge warning is now in effect from north of Port Canaveral, Florida, up to the North Carolina-Virginia border.

At least seven deaths have been reported in the Bahamas from Dorian, with the full scope of the disaster still unknown.

Officials in Florida are expecting some beach erosion but say there have been no reports of major damage as Hurricane Dorian passed near Daytona Beach.

The National Weather Service reported a peak wind gust of 79mph in New Smyrna Beach early Wednesday.

There were reports of seawater surging up the beach ramps in several locations.

Over 2 million people along the coast in Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina were warned to evacuate earlier this week.

Even if landfall does not occur, the system is likely to cause storm surge and severe flooding, the NHC said.

'Don't tough it out. Get out,' said US Federal Emergency Management Agency official Carlos Castillo.

Across the Southeast, interstate highways leading away from beaches in South Carolina and Georgia were turned into one-way evacuation routes.

Several airports announced closings, and hundreds of flights were canceled.

But on Wednesday, officials said Orlando International Airport resumed commercial operations at noon.

Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort also opened for a full day on Wednesday after having closed early Tuesday.

SeaWorld Orlando reopened mid-morning Wednesday after being closed all day Tuesday.

Police in coastal Savannah, Georgia, announced an overnight curfew.

North Carolina Gov Roy Cooper ordered a mandatory evacuation of the dangerously exposed barrier islands along the state's entire coast.

The US Navy has ordered ships based on Virginia's coast to head out to sea to avoid Hurricane Dorian.

Navy spokeswoman Elizabeth Baker said by phone Wednesday that vessels docked at the world's largest Navy base in Norfolk and other nearby installations are getting under way.

Vice Admiral Andrew Lewis said in a statement Tuesday that the ships will remain at sea until the threat from the storm subsides. Navy aircraft will either be secured in hangars or fly to more inland airfields.
