livering a vicious tirade at a trade minister who shouted an objection.
He called veteran MP Graham Stuart a 'young man' and a 'footling member', and urged them to leave the chamber - jibing: 'Like it or lump it.'
Opposition MPs gave Mr Bercow - who will walk away with a gold-plated £1million non-contributory pension after 10 years in the famous green chair - a standing ovation after his announcement. He was also praised by MEP Guy Verhofstadt who trolled that he should be the UK's next EU commissioner.
However, almost all Tories pointedly stayed seated and then quickly filed out of the chamber during 90 minutes of gushing tributes from his fans.
Conservatives were scathing behind the scenes. His 'pompous' announcement and choice of date sparked 'laughter' in No10, while one furious Eurosceptic said: 'At least the next Speaker can't be much more biased.'
Other critics were even less diplomatic, branding Mr Bercow a 'nauseating w***er', joking that the 'witch is dead' and exchanging smiley face emojis. Nigel Farage said simply: 'Good riddance.'
No10 sources have claimed that Mr Johnson will take revenge by ensuring he is the first Speaker not to go to the Lords when he steps down - although it is not altogether clear how he would wield such a veto.
Revealing his intentions, Mr Bercow said: 'At the 2017 election, I promised my wife and children that it would be my last,' he told the House.
'This is a pledge that I intend to keep. If the House votes tonight for an early general election, my tenure as Speaker and MP will end when this Parliament ends.
'If the House does not so vote, I have concluded that the least disruptive and most democratic course of action would be for me to stand down at the close of business on Thursday, October 31.'
Mr Bercow said that meant that he could be in the chair for Queen's Speech votes expected on October 21 and 22.
He added wryly: 'The week or so after that may be quite lively and it would be best to have an experienced figure in the chair for that short period.'
Jeremy Corbyn and Remainer MPs queued up to heap praise on the outgoing Speaker - who last week caused fury by bending Parliamentary procedure to help pass a law that effectively rules out No Deal.
He said: 'In your role as Speaker you have totally changed the way in which the job has been done.'
Yesterday business secretary Andrea Leadsom said that, by allowing MPs to take over the Parliamentary timetable, the Speaker 'hadn't just bent the rules, he has broken them'.
The Cabinet Minister – who clashed repeatedly with Mr Bercow when she was Commons Leader – described last Tuesday's vote as 'a flagrant abuse', adding: 'It is right that the Conservatives will recognise this fact at the next General Election by standing our candidate in Buckingham.'
Ms Leadsom added that Mr Bercow's decision to allow MPs to ban No Deal 'acts in complete disregard to the will of the people – not just on Brexit, but on whom they have chosen to govern them.
'It adds insult to injury that in doing so, Labour have afforded themselves power without accountability. This is a route to the diminution of our democracy – which is why the Prime Minister is now calling for a General Election.
'Bring it on, I say, and give us back an impartial Speaker.'
The next Speaker looks likely to come from the opposition benches with the frontrunners to replace Mr Bercow almost all Labour MPs.
After John Bercow announced he is to step down in October a host of experienced parliamentarians are set to put themselves forward in a vote by MPs.
They will choose his successor in a secret ballot, which sees the candidates eliminated until one has more than 50 per cent of the vote.
The announcement from Mr Bercow means he now faces trying to navigate the Brexit process no just with an activist Speaker in the chair, but one who is demob happy.
Earlier, Downing Street confirmed prorogation will happen this evening even if - as expected - the PM loses his latest effort to force a snap election.
With his gap-toothed grin and cheeky expression, it is clear that Prince George is growing up fast. Two pictures of the future king have been released by Kensington Palace to mark his seventh birthday today. Gone are his chubby cheeks and the frilled Peter Pan-collar shirts that his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, so loved to dress him in as a toddler and beyond. Instead we see a little boy, tousled blond hair swept aside and grinning, wearing a camouflage green T-shirt. An appropriate choice given he will one day inherit his great-grandmother’s mantle as Head of the Armed Forces. George is already said to be obsessed with helicopters like his father. In another picture he is wearing a favourite olive green polo shirt and shorts. The pictures were taken by his mother Kate at the family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis, have spent lockdown.
