Summer officially begins with the hottest day of the year

Summer officially begins with the hottest day of the year

NEWS: goo.gl/a3kAcQ

Britain is set for 'wall-to-wall sunshine' on Mother's Day with glorious sunshine and 19C temperatures as the clocks go forward to mark the start of the official summer.

While the North may see some cloudier weather, much of the country will stay dry and pleasantly warm for the rest of the weekend and into Monday.

The glorious weather makes up for the missing hour in bed lost by Britons after the clocks went forward.

And the balmy conditions around the country represent a stark contrast in the bleak, stormy weather seen just days ago when heavy snow fell and parts of the UK were battered by an Arctic blast.

Clocks went forward by one hour, meaning there will be more daylight in the evenings and less in the mornings. But it means Britons got an hour less in bed.

A Met Office forecaster said: 'It's looking like a fine weekend ahead of us with plenty of dry and sunny weather.

'It could be wall-to-wall sunshine for much of the country but with some cloudier weather in the North.

'We're looking at highs of around 18C (64F) or 19C (66F) which could make it the hottest day of the year so far.'

He added: 'It will be pleasantly warm throughout the day but temperatures will drop considerably tonight.'

The hottest day of the year so far was March 15 in Kew Gardens.

According the Met Office, the UK's weekend weather could even beat the south of Spain which is predicted to be around 17C (62F).

A dry day is predicted on Sunday with plenty of sunshine after any early fog has cleared. Feeling warm for many, however it will be quite breezy in the far south.

It will be mostly dry on Monday with some sunshine, but cloudier across the north.

However, according to the Met Office, showers could spread across the south of the country from Tuesday.

Conditions will then begin to turn unsettled from the west on Wednesday and Thursday, but staying mostly dry across the south-east, according to forecasters.

The Met Office says conditions are likely to be more unsettled next weekend, with wind and rain slowly clearing eastern counties through the day on Friday.

Sunshine and showers will continue on Saturday, turning heavy and blustery at times in the north.

Over the next few days, forecasters say the country will see further unsettled weather in the northwest, with outbreaks of rain and occasional showers.
