Team USA's Lindsey Vonn eliminated from Alpine combined

Lindsey Vonn has failed to complete the women's Alpine combined after missing a gate.

Vonn, the leader after the downhill portion, made a mistake early in the slalom on Thursday in Pyeongchang and didn't finish in what's likely the final race of her Olympic career.

The first - and likely only - Olympic race between Vonn and her US teammate Mikaela Shiffrin had been expected to go down to the wire.

Shiffrin took the silver medal in the event. Switerzerland's Michelle Gisin took gold while fellow Swiss Wendy Holdener took bronze.

Vonn was one of three athletes who started the women's Alpine combined event to be marked 'did not finish'. A fourth was disqualified.

Vonn, who had led after the downhill section, was the last skier to compete but did not finish her slalom run leaving the 24-year-old Gisin to take her first Olympic medal.

Gisin won with a combined time of two minutes 20.90, nearly a second ahead of pre-race favorite Shiffrin.

Shiffrin's silver adds another medal to her burgeoning collection. She won Olympic gold in the giant slalom a week ago and captured the slalom title at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Fans instantly reacted with heartbreak at the disappointing ending to what could be 33-year-old Vonn's last Olympic race.

'My heart breaks for Lindsey Vonn as she goes off track and missed out on another Olympic medal,' one said on Twitter.

'Ugh I wish that run wouldn't have ended up like that for Lindsey Vonn. H*te to see her go out without a medal,' wrote one.

'Last Olympic run. Man oh man,' wrote another.

Vonn finishes the 2018 games with a single bronze medal, in women's downhill
