UK weather Washout as a month of rain falls in 12 hours

Britain will be battered by a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours today as the country prepares for flooding.

The South East and Midlands of England are under a Met Office weather warning from 4pm today until 9am tomorrow as a summer washout brings up to 2.4in (60mm) in half a day - with 1.6in (40mm) possible in six hours.

And the heatwave that brought the hottest June day since 1976 as temperatures hit 94.1F (34.5C) this time last week will also be a forgotten memory, as conditions fail to get up to 70F (21C) for the rest of this week.

The Met Office said there is a risk of heavy rain with thunder possible over southern England today before it spreads north overnight. Up to 1.2in (30mm) could fall in an hour, but many places will miss the worst of the rain.

Forecasters added that there is a chance of flooding of homes and businesses as well as disruption to transport, while a warning has also been issued over Northern Ireland where up to 1.6in (40mm) could fall in two hours.

Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway had already had 1.6in (40mm) of rain in the 12 hours up to 2pm today. The average rainfall for the whole month of June in England is 2.4in (62mm).

The downpours will continue over parts of England and Wales tonight with patchy rain is expected over Ireland. However it will be drier in Scotland as rain largely clears, while cloud will also persist for much of the country.

Tomorrow will bring further rain for England and Wales, but it will be drier across Scotland and Northern Ireland although most areas will see cloud. Thursday will bring further outbreaks of rain, mainly in the North and West.

Friday will be yet another day of rain as a band of wet weather moves south-eastwards across the country – and it will also be windy, with a good deal of cloud.

The recent heatwave saw 94.1F (34.5C) in London last Wednesday. Parts of Britain had temperatures above 86F (30C) for five consecutive days, making it the hottest prolonged spell since the long, hot summer of 1976.

Yesterday's top temperature was 25.4C at Hampton in South West London, while Katesbridge in County Down fell all the way to 32F (0C) overnight. The wettest place was Derrylin in County Fermanagh with 0.3in (7mm) of rain.
