London Eye evacuated after unexploded WWII bomb spotted



The London Eye has been evacuated after a member of the public spotted an unexploded World War Two bomb.

Cordons in the Waterloo area of the capital were put in place and police and people were forced to leave the ride.

Police boats were seen on the River Thames and a force helicopter also circled overhead, after a tourist spotted the object near the river.



A woman, named Kade, said, that the London Eye had to be sped up to get everyone off the landmark.

She tweeted: 'The whole area around the London Eye was evacuated by police while we were at the top and they had to speed it up to get everyone off.'

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman told the Evening Standard: 'Police were called at 10.30am to reports of suspected World War Two ordnance seen on the foreshore of the River Thames.

'Cordons are in place while the object is assessed.'



The cordons were lifted this afternoon due to the tide coming in.

The Thames Clipper twitter account said the London Eye Pier had been re-opened after an hour and apologised for the inconvenience.

It said the boat service would resume as per the timetable.
