Hugh Hefner passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday.



Within minutes of learning of the Playboy founder's shock death, there was an outpouring of messages and sentimental tributes from those that knew the controversial businessman.



"American Icon and Playboy Founder, Hugh M. Hefner passed away today," the official Twitter account for Playboy tweeted. "He was 91. #RIPHef".The publisher died of natural causes in his home, The Playboy Mansion, in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife and four children.



Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones," a rep for the Playboy Enterprises founder said in a statement to People."



Celebrities including Kim Kardashian West, Mark Hamill, Nancy Sinatra, 50 Cent, Gene Simmons, and Paris Hilton are just a few of the celebs who have taken to social media to react to the news.



Former Playboy pin-up Donna D'Errico, who posed for the magazine as its Playmate of the month for September 1995, tweeted a heartfelt tribute to Hugh's death.



"Hugh Hefner put me in Playboy & ignited my career," she tweeted. "I am forever indebted, Hef. You will forever live on as an icon of epic proportions."



"RIP Hugh Hefner I went to so many of his parties at the Playboy mansion it was legendary you will never be forgotten," American rapper Juicy J tweeted.
