Kit Harington was 'wrong' to complain about 'sexism'
Kit Harington was 'wrong' to complain about 'sexism'
Kit Harington has admitted he was 'wrong' to claim men experience 'sexism' in the film industry.
The Game Of Thrones star, 30, said he was treated like a 'set of looks' by some studio executives and that it was 'demeaning,' in an interview last May.
But the actor has now backtracked, conceding that while he does feel 'sexually objectified' at times, he shouldn't have compared his experience to a woman's.
He hit the headlines last year, when he told The Sunday Times magazine: 'I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks. It's demeaning.
'Yes, in some ways you could argue I've been employed for a look I have. But there's a sexism that happens towards men,' he added.
'There's definitely a sexism in our industry that happens towards women, and there is towards men as well.'
Discussing his comments, he has since said he shouldn't have claimed his position is the 'same' as a woman's in society in terms of sexism.
'Sexism against men is not something I should have really said. I think what I meant was, being objectified,' he told the Guardian.
'Has that made me feel uncomfortable in the past? Yes. Do I think my position is the same as a woman's in society? No. They're very different things, and I should have separated them. I was wrong.'
Kit has played Jon Snow on Game Of Thrones since the show began six years ago, and met his fiance Rose on the set as she played his love interest, Ygritte.
The couple - who have been dating since 2012 - announced their engagement this month with a traditional announcement in The Times newspaper.
The Testament Of Youth actor revealed why the couple - who are notoriously private about their love life - 'never' pose with fans for selfies together.
'Me and Rose, we never do a photo together. Because then it makes our relationship feel like… puppets. Like we're a walking show,' he told the paper.
It comes after Kit recently revealed he went to a fancy dress party dressed as Jon Snow because Rose forced him to.
He had been going to a 'bad taste' themed party with Rose and had been offered the costume in a fancy dress shop by the retail worker who didn't recognise him.
Kit told Heat magazine: 'She pulled out a Jon Snow costume, and Rose just whispered in my ear "I won't love you if you don't wear it... You should do it"'.
Describing the moment he attended the party, Kit recalled: 'It was really embarrassing. The people bringing around canapes were looking at me, thinking. "You're sad man! You've come to a party dressed as your character".
Adding insult to injury, Kit revealed that the fancy dress shop assistant appeared to recognise him as he left, which he claimed made the incident 'even sadder'.
Kit has played Jon Snow since the show began six years ago, and met Rose on the set as she played his love interest, Ygritte, until 2014.
Their wedding is set to be such a monumental affair that it could bring production on the eighth and final season to a complete standstill - given that half of the guests are likely involved in the show.
Talking to Jonathan Ross, Kit revealed that he fully expects some time off to get married - 'I rang [the producer] up and I said, "I'm getting married and it's your fault, actually."
'I was like, "You need to factor in a Game of Thrones wedding by the way. [The cast] have all got to be there so the whole thing has got to shut down.'
Kit is currently starring in Gunpowder, a historical drama in which he plays Robert Catesby, the mastermind behind the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

Google pays Britain just £36million in corporation tax NEWS: goo.gl/a3kAcQ Google paid £36.4 million in UK corporation tax for the year to June 30, 2016, the company has revealed. The US search giant recorded sales of £1.03bn and a pre-tax profit of £149m in the UK for the 12 months to the end of June 2016. Google and other major tech firms have come under pressure over their tax arrangements. With his gap-toothed grin and cheeky expression, it is clear that Prince George is growing up fast. Two pictures of the future king have been released by Kensington Palace to mark his seventh birthday today. Gone are his chubby cheeks and the frilled Peter Pan-collar shirts that his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, so loved to dress him in as a toddler and beyond. Instead we see a little boy, tousled blond hair swept aside and grinning, wearing a camouflage green T-shirt. An appropriate choice given he will one day inherit his great-grandmother’s mantle as Head of the Armed Forces. George is already said to be obsessed with helicopters like his father. In another picture he is wearing a favourite olive green polo shirt and shorts. The pictures were taken by his mother Kate at the family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis, have spent lockdown. Kate and Prince William are planning a party for ...
