Moment Nashville nurse sings song to dying patient

This is the heartbreaking moment a nurse broke down and cried as she sang to a cancer patient.

Olivia Neufelder sat next to Margaret Smith, 63, and held her hand as she sang 'Dancing in the Sky' by Dani and Lizzy to her at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

At one point, nurse Neufelder is seen wiping the tears from her face as she sings.

Ms Smith's friend filmed the moment before her daughter, Megan Smith, published the video on Facebook on Monday in a bid to find Ms Neufelder and thank her.

The video has since racked up 3.5 million views.

In a post, Megan wrote: 'This nurse sat with my mom for hours while [she suffered from the effects of] too much Anesthesia and sang a very special song to my sweet mother to comfort her.

'You never left her side by choice!! Words cannot describe the appreciation and love we feel for nurse Olivia who mom calls her angel!

'Your dedication to your patients is beyond any that I have seen, you truly are a beam of light and I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and care and love you shared for my mother.

'God bless you Olivia! (I hope you all share this so it can find its way back to nurse Olivia in Vanderbilt).'

During an interview with News Channel 5 Network, Ms Neufelder said she would sing to Ms Smith every day during her stay at the hospital.

She was admitted due to a decline in her health after suffering from liver cancer for a year, but was then moved to a nursing Cookeville, where she died on Wednesday.

Speaking to the news organisation afterwards, Ms Neufelder said: 'There was almost a sense of peace knowing that it was her favorite song and she did tell me it's the song she wants played at her funeral.

She didn't feel like a patient at that time. I wanted her to know that she was loved even if her family wasn't able to be there.

'I recently lost my grandmother and went through a similar experience and I was singing to her as she passed too.'
