Ivanka Trump pulls out all the stops at the first Trump state dinner
Ivanka Trump pulls out all the stops at the first Trump state dinner
Ivanka Trump pulled out all the stops in a $14,600 dress as her father hosts his first ever state dinner for the French president.
The first daughter stunned in a pink polka-dot gown by Rodarte with ruffles along the top and a blossom embellishment at the pleated waist.
The 36-year-old completed the look with a pair of black shoes, drop earrings and her blonde hair in an updo.
She was accompanied by her husband and Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner in a tuxedo as they were photographed in the Booksellers Area of the White House heading to the dinner
President Donald Trump and his wife Melania were exchanged hugs and kisses with President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte on the steps of the White House ahead of the glitzy state dinner.
Melania stole the show in a Chanel haute couture silver gown that had been embroidered with crystals and sequins.
The Trumps and Macrons then headed inside for the festivities.
Reporters were left off the invite list but one media mogul was an exception: the owner of Fox News Channel, Rupert Murdoch. He held the hand of his wife, Jerry Hall, as they made their way into the White House.
Other notable guests include CEO of Apple Tim Cook and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.
The White House will release the full guest list, which is expected to number around 130, directly before the dinner, but Congressional Democrats and White House reporters are already known to have been left out.
The only Democrat known to be in attendance is Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, because it is custom to invite Louisiana politicians to state dinners with France due to the state's Cajun-French roots.
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Steven Mnuchin and his colorful actress wife Louise Linton were also among the arriving guests.
Linton, wearing a champagne and silver gown by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, told reporters she was looking forward to 'everything French' upon arrival.
The White House showed off the finishing touches of first lady Melania Trump's decor on Monday night, from the place-setting to the giant flower arrangements greeting guests.
Reporters were briefly allowed into the White House and were greeted by gold table settings, gold silverware, gold candlesticks, gold wine glasses, gold chairs – situated elegantly around bouquets of green and white flowers – in the candlelit state dining room.
At each of the place settings was a menu with the White House seal and the French fleur-de-lis, which were also in gold.
Just outside the state dining room, the first lady went with a different theme, using some 1,200 cherry blossoms in giant black vases that would greet guests as they entered.
Earlier on Monday, the White House had released some details about the dinner, including the menu.
Goat cheese gateau, tomato jam, buttermilk biscuit crumbles, young variegated lettuces will be served, along with a rack of spring lamb, burnt cipollini soubise and Carolina gold Rice Jambalaya, with a nectarine tart and crème fraîche ice cream for dessert.
For drinks, two wines from Oregon and a demi-sec champagne are on the menu.

With his gap-toothed grin and cheeky expression, it is clear that Prince George is growing up fast. Two pictures of the future king have been released by Kensington Palace to mark his seventh birthday today. Gone are his chubby cheeks and the frilled Peter Pan-collar shirts that his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, so loved to dress him in as a toddler and beyond. Instead we see a little boy, tousled blond hair swept aside and grinning, wearing a camouflage green T-shirt. An appropriate choice given he will one day inherit his great-grandmother’s mantle as Head of the Armed Forces. George is already said to be obsessed with helicopters like his father. In another picture he is wearing a favourite olive green polo shirt and shorts. The pictures were taken by his mother Kate at the family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis, have spent lockdown. Kate and Prince William are planning a party for ...
