Melania Trump made a style statement when she wore a white wide-brimmed hat on Tuesday, and now people are gleefully comparing her to everyone from Beyoncé to Olivia Pope.



The 47-year-old first lady paired the eye-catching hat, designed by Hervé Pierre, the man behind her inaugural ball dress, with a $2,195 white skirt suit by Michael Kors for the State Arrival Ceremony at the White House this morning.



The Trump administration is hosting its first official state visit this week, and while France's first lady Brigitte Macron, 65, also wore an all-white ensemble, it was Melania's bold hat that caused a stir on Twitter.





'Is Melania having a Beyoncé moment?' Melissa Mobley tweeted, referencing the black wide-brimmed hat the singer famously wore in her formation video and later on the red carpet.



Another person called it 'Melania's Formation hat,' while someone else insisted: 'Melania wants to be Beyoncé in that hat.'



Amanda McKelvey shared a photo of the first lady alongside a photo of Beyoncé and joked: 'Okay ladies, now let's get in formation.'



Although there were plenty of jokes at Melania's expense there were also those who were fans of the statement piece.



Only women with the juiciest stories wear these kind of hats - just saying the hat choice is mighty interesting!' one person commented. 'Is Melania about to drop her OWN version of Lemonade! I’m here for it! Throw a @djkhaled beat in there &she wins!'



Others believed Melania was really channeling Kerry Washington's Scandal character Olivia Pope in her all-white suit and wide-brimmed hat.



The first lady's look was so Scandal-esque, the show's costume designer Lyn Paolo couldn't resist pointing out the similarities between the first lady's outfit and the ones worn by Olivia of Olivia Pope & Associates.

White coats are a signature of Olivia's, and she has also been known to rock a white hat both literally and metaphorically, as the phrase 'wear the white hat' means doing the right thing on the show.



'Is Melania Trump’s white hat a symbol of morality like Olivia Pope’s?' one person asked, while a woman name Suzy added: 'Melania Trump is h*rdcore channeling Olivia Pope in that outfit. I wonder what she's trying to say with that white hat...'



Some people joked that Melania wore the white hat to send a message to the American people, with Colleen Wordock wondering: 'Is this a signal to OPA?'



Another woman named Natalie tweeted: 'Melania looks like Olivia Pope in that outfit. Ready to take down corruption in the White House. We’re here for you M! #whitehat.'



The comparisons to Beyoncé and Olivia Pope were by far the most popular ones, but some Twitter users had varying opinions.



A woman named Deb thought Melania was giving off a serious 1980s vibe in her skirt suit and hat, and she shared photos of the first lady alongside pictures of Christie Brinkley in Billy Joel's Uptown Girl video and Joan Collins playing Alexis Colby on Dynasty. 



'Who wore it better? @FLOTUS on the South Lawn, Christie Brinkley in Uptown Girls video or Joan Collins on Dynasty? Melania looks like she wants to go back to the 80’s!' she wrote.



A woman named Claudia agreed with the Joan Collins reference, tweeting: 'Melania Trump channeling Alexis Colby welcoming French President Macron today! #PowerSuit #ShoulderPads #Dynasty #80s.



Ben Shapiro shared a photo of Don Fanucci from The Godfather, joking: 'How did Melania get Fanucci's hat?'



And Austin McCollum compared Melania's hat to the one Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky wore in his 1973 film 'The Holy Mountain.'
