Bakery claims Trump ordered exact replica of Obama's cake

A bakery owner said she was commissioned to replicate Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration cake for Donald Trump after the original creator pointed out the uncanny similarities.

Tiffany MacIsaac, who owns the Buttercream Bakeshop in Washington DC, revealed a client gave her a photo of Obama's cake with the directive to create the 'exact' one for Trump's 'Salute to Our Troops' ball on Friday.

Duff Goldman, who created the nine-layer cake four years ago, posted two photos of the nearly identical cakes on Friday night and hinted his work had been 'plagiarized'.

Goldman posted two photos of the cakes and tweeted: 'The cake on the left is the one I made for President Obama's inauguration four years ago. The one on the right is Trump's. I didn't make it.'

He followed up the subtle accusation with a skeptical, confused emoji.

The post was retweeted 100,000 times and liked by more than 195,000 people since it was posted.

Twitter users seemed to agree with the Ace of Cakes star, with one calling it 'an exact ripoff' while another suggested that 'Melania had made the cake' in a reference to her plagiarized speech at the Republican National Convention.

Buttercream Bakeshop issued a statement on their Instagram account on Saturday, giving credit to Goldman while revealing they were simply following through on their client's demands.

'While we most love creating original designs, when we are asked to replicate someone else's work we are thrilled when it is a masterpiece like this one,' the statement read.

'@duff_goldman originally created this for Obama's inauguration 4 years ago and this years committee commissioned us to re-create it.'

The bakeshop also threw their support behind LGBT rights, saying profits from the cake would go to the Human Rights Campaign.

MacIsaac told the Washington Post her employees tried to encourage the client - who she declined to name - to use Goldman's creation as 'inspiration' for an original design.

She said: 'They came to us a couple of weeks ago, which is pretty last minute, and said "We have a photo that we would like to replicate."

When her bakers tried to steer the client towards other ideas, MacIsaac said the client gave specific instructions to replicate 'this exact cake', calling it 'perfect'.

After MacIsaac acknowledged the cake was a copy, Goldman extended an olive branch.

He tweeted: 'Remembering a fantastic cake I made is awesome and the chef that re-created it for @POTUS Trump did a fantastic job. Group hug, y'all.'

Obama's patriotic cake was made with different hues of blue, starting with light blue at the bottom and navy blue at the top.

The 18-inch base cake had nine tiers and layers featured stars, stripes, military seals and the presidential seal.

MacIsaac revealed the cake was intended as a decorative centerpiece since most of it was Styrofoam inside.
