George W. Bush had trouble with poncho at inauguration
George W. Bush had trouble with poncho at inauguration
In the end, it rained on Trump's parade.
The VIP guests who were lucky enough to score a seat on the main stage for Donald Trump's swearing-in ceremony got a bit of an unwelcome surprise on Friday when it began to shower during his remarks.
That sudden rain sent a sea of perfectly-coiffed and expensively-attired members of the political elite rushing for their umbrella and ponchos, hoping to remain dry.
Some, like Melania Trump, had no trouble at all dealing with the rain, while for others it was more of a struggle.
Hillary Clinton was forced to rely on her husband Bill to help he rout, with the former president crafting a makeshift bonnet out of a plastic poncho to cover his wife's hair.
And George W. Bush was photographed as he engaged in what appeared to be an epic struggle with his rain gear.
Bush it seems could not decide what part of his body he most wanted to keep dry, a choice forced upon all guests it seems as they were each given just one poncho.
The exception to that was Melania, who popped open a clear umbrella the second it started to sprinkle.
At first, Bush covered his suit with his poncho. He then decided to cover his head instead with the plastic protective wear.
Finally, Bush put both his head and torso inside the poncho, making it impossible for him to see what was happening at the ceremony.
When he then eventually removed the poncho, Bush had a large grin on his face.
The public was also being pelted with rain as they assembled on the Washington Mall for the ceremony, but many did not seem to mind one bit.
Quite a few people were both wet and crying as Trump delivered his address on Friday.
And while the rain was less than ideal, guests did get to enjoy one of the warmest inauguration days in recent memory, with a temperature of 48 degrees by the time Trump spoke.
And Melania was not the only guest who got an umbrella, with Michelle Obama also being afforded that luxury.
She chose to share her umbrella with Dr. Jill Biden as the two ladies sat in font of Hillary, who had Bill's handmade bonnet.
Melania had managed to ignore the rain earlier in the day as she attended mass at St. John’s Church and then headed to the White House.
This despite the fact that she was dressed for the most important day of her life.
The public got their first glance at Melania's perfectly-tailored baby blue look when she departed Blair House Friday morning alongside her husband on their way to mass at St. John’s Church on Friday morning.
Melania accessorized her outfit with a pair of heels, clutch and elbow-length gloves that were all the same hue of blue.
The 46-year-old then made the decision to keep everything else simple, choosing to play up her natural beauty by sweeping her hair into a loose undo and wearing no jewelry other than a pair of massive diamond solitaire studs.
Melania's decision to wear a pale blue and her choice of gloves made it immediately clear that she was channeling Jacqueline Kennedy, who wore a similar outfit back in 1961 when John F. Kennedy was sworn into office.
And for the big day, Melania turned to one of Hillary Clinton's favorite designers - Ralph Lauren.
She spent lockdown in London where she pined to travel the world once again. The US search giant recorded sales of £1.03bn and a pre-tax profit of £149m in the UK for the 12 months to the end of June 2016. Google and other major tech firms have come under pressure over their tax arrangements. A Google spokesman said: 'As an international business, we pay the majority of our taxes in our home country, as well as all the taxes due in the UK. 'We have recently announced significant new investment in the UK, including new offices in Kings Cross for 7,000 staff.' With his gap-toothed grin and cheeky expression, it is clear that Prince George is growing up fast. Two pictures of the future king have been released by Kensington Palace to mark his seventh birthday today. Gone are his chubby cheeks and the frilled Peter Pan-collar shirts that his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, so loved to dress him in as a toddler and beyond. Instead we see a little boy, tousled blond hair swept aside and grinning, wearing a camouflage green T-shirt. An appropriate choice given he will one day inherit his great-grandmother’s mantle as Head of the Armed Forces. George is already said to be obsessed with helicopters like his father. In another picture he is wearing a favourite olive green polo shirt and shorts. The pictures were taken by his mother Kate at the family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis, have spent lockdown. Kate and Prince William are planning a party for ...
