Trump touts 'beautiful' letter left for him in by Obama

President Trump revealed that President Obama had kept to tradition and left him a letter – but wouldn't tell the world what the outgoing Democrat said.

'I just went to the Oval Office and found this beautiful letter from President Obama,' Trump said at a swearing-in ceremony for his senior staff at the White House today.

Before getting to the business at hand, he deployed his latest dig at the media. 'And we won't even tell the press what's in the letter,' he said, receiving laughs.



Trump may not reveal Obama's words of advice, but on Friday the National Archives released the note that Obama had received from outgoing Republican President George W. Bush on his inauguration day.

While Obama had blasted Bush's record throughout the 2008 presidential campaign, Bush welcomed the young Democrat into the White House in 2009 with open arms.

Bush wished Obama a 'congratulations' and said 'you have just begun a fantastic chapter in your life.'

'Very few,' Bush noted, have had the honor of the responsibility and the excitement of the challenges ahead.

'There will be trying moments,' Bush warned. 'The critics will rage. Your "friends" will disappoint you.'



But you will have Almighty God to comfort you, a family who loves you, and a country that is pulling for you, including me,' he continued.

'No matter what comes, you will be inspired by the character and compassion of the people you now lead,' Bush had wrote.

Things were even more rough and tumble in the 2016 campaign.

Even before he ran for president, Trump had been one of the loudest voices to give credence to the 'birther' conspiracy theory, which questioned Obama's legitimacy as president by questioning his place of birth.

During the campaign, the billionaire went after Obama's record, and has already taken the first few steps to dismantle the outgoing president's signature health care law, Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act.



Trump also triumphed over Obama's former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, who both the president and first lady campaigned for heavily.

That being said, once Trump was elected, Obama welcomed him to the White House and the two reportedly conversed often during the transition period.

 Talking about the letter at today's ceremony, Trump uttered: 'It was really very nice of him to do that.'

'And we will cherish that,' the president said of the note.
