Did Trump quote BANE in his inauguration speech

Did Donald Trump plagiarize the Batman supervillain Bane?

That's what the internet is wondering following a hilarious video that splices footage from Trump's inauguration speech with a speech the masked mercenary gave to Gotham City residents.

The 45th president said yesterday: 'Today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, DC and giving it back to you, the people.'

Timothy Burke, an editor at Deadspin, picked up and the quotation's striking similarity to one of Bane's lines from the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises and tweeted about it.

Bane said: 'We take Gotham from the corrupt. The rich. The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you, the people.'

TDKR was the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

In the film, the supervillain Bane exploited populism sentiments in Gotham City to further Ra's al Ghul's goal of annihilating the fictional metropolis.

This comes after Melania Trump was accused of plagiarizing Michelle Obama in her speech at the Republican National Convention in July 2016.

Meredith McIver, an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization, admitted she wrote down portions of the Obama speech – with Mrs Trump reading them to her over the phone – and included them later in the draft she presented to Melania.

Trump also recently revealed his campaign slogan for 2020.

In an interview with the Washington Post, he said it would be: 'Keep America Great.'

He then moved to trademark the phrase, which was one of the taglines for the summer horror film The Purge: Election Year.
