Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle co ordinate on Commonwealth Day

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle co ordinate on Commonwealth Day

When you're attending a high profile gathering, you usually want to make sure your outfit makes you stand out.

But today the royal women looked as if they had agreed to co-ordinate as they attended the annual Commonwealth Day service in shades of navy and white.

Former Suits star Meghan Markle looked glamorous in a white coat by Amanda Wakeley, teamed with a navy dress and matching suede heels.

She was an unlikely match with Princess Anne, 67, who also opted for a cream and navy ensemble.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 36, continued her run of blue outfits, stepping out in a navy coat and dress by Beulah London matched with a recycled hat from Lock & Co.

The Countess of Wessex co-ordinated perfectly with her relatives in a smart navy coat teamed with nu*e shoes and a matching clutch bag

And the Duchess of Cornwall was also on board with the colour scheme in a navy coat dress with a white floral embellishment.

In fact, the only female family member in attendance who didn't bide by the informal dress code was the Queen, who stood out in a cheerful berry coloured coat as she arrived at the Abbey.

Today's service was Meghan's first official event with the Queen, sealing her place in the royal family, so it was no wonder she wanted to get her fashion choices spot on.

Former One Direction band member Liam Payne will perform during the service - but the Duke of Edinburgh, who has effectively retired from public duties, is not attending.

In her Commonwealth Day message, which will feature in the service, the Queen has praised the 'Commonwealth connection' that allows people from different nations to bond and celebrate 'diversity'.

London will soon host a gathering of leaders from the 'family of nations' and the Queen also paid tribute to the biennial event, an example of how consensus can 'help to create a future that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous and sustainable'.

In her message the Queen says: 'Through exchanging ideas, and seeing life from other perspectives, we grow in understanding and work more collaboratively towards a common future.

'There is a very special value in the insights we gain through the Commonwealth connection; shared inheritances help us overcome difference so that diversity is a cause for celebration rather than division.
