Chris Cornell became cocky after wife confronted him



Chris Cornell became 'cocky and aggressive' when confronted over his drug taking minutes before he was found dead, according to a report of the singer's final conversation with his wife.

TMZ claims Vicky phoned Cornell 30 minutes before his death to ask why he was turning the lights in their family home on and off, which he could do remotely from his phone.

Cornell reportedly began slurring his speech, repeating words and complaining about his crew having 'f***** up again', prompting Vicky to ask him whether he had taken any drugs.



The singer said: 'I was really angry and I just took 2 Ativan. I'm really pissed and I had to calm myself down.' But Vicky challenged him on this, claiming 'it sounds like you took something else'.

This reportedly prompted Cornell to become 'cocky and aggressive', a tone that Vicky told friends reminded her of when the singer had become hooked on Oxycontin 14 years ago and nearly died.

After Cornell started saying words that made no sense, a panicked Vicky hung up and ordered the singer's bodyguard to run to his Detroit hotel room to make sure he was ok.

But after the bodyguard managed to break through both doors into the room he found the singer's dead body.



The account comes after sources told TMZ the Soudergarden frontman had fresh and 'obvious' track marks on his arms when he was found dead - indicating that he may have injected drugs.

Vicky said he did not use needles and had no track marks on his arms before he left for Detroit.

He first tried heroin when he was 12 years old, and struggled with multiple addictions - but eventually got sober around 2002.

The rocker's exact cause of death won't be known until toxicology tests are finished, which usually take weeks.



However, the new report about track marks on Cornell's arm does appear to line up with what his longtime house engineer and tour manager Ted Keedick told TMZ about Chris' behavior at his last show.

Teedick told TMZ that Cornell seemed 'high' and 'f***** up' during the Soundgarden performance in Detroit.

'Chris was out of character from note one of the show. I've never heard or seen him that way before, at least if we did not cancel a show,' Ted Keedick - who spent more than 10 years with Cornell as engineer and tour manager - said.



However, Teedick said it didn't appear that Cornell was at all depressed.  

Cornell was cremated at a private ceremony attended by his immediate family and friends at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Tuesday.

The private ceremony was attended by his wife, brother Peter and friends Linda Ramone and J.D. King, TMZ reported.

His ashes will be buried at a separate funeral service held at the cemetery on Friday

Sources told the website fans will be allowed to visit the burial site following the private service.

Tributes have poured in for the singer following his death last week, including from Courtney Love, U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Courtney posted a photograph of Chris, captioning it with the words: 'Goodbye darling boy. Please say hi to all my loved ones. I cried for you today. Rip.'



U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers both dedicated performances to the Audioslave star in the days after his death.

There was also a tribute to the singer at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night.

He was described as 'a singer who had a voice for the ages' as a moment of silence was called for from the audience.



A medical examiner ruled on Thursday that Chris had hanged himself.

However, his family have said that they do not believe that he was suicidal and believe his thoughts of self-harm may be attributed to the side effects of the prescription drug Ativan.

Chris's wife Vicky said he showed no signs he was feeling depressed when she spoke to him, during soundcheck before, and after his final show on Wednesday night.



But when she tried reaching him again that evening, she became concerned he wasn't answering his phone and called his bodyguard to check on him, according to Channel 4 WDIV Detroit.

The bodyguard had to force his way into Cornell's hotel room, in Detroit's MGM Grand, where they found him dead. The singer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detroit police said the death had been investigated as a possible suicide from the very start, after cops noted some 'basic things observed at the scene,' spokesman Michael Woody said.

He also chose a dark song about to end his gig with on Wednesday.

Devastated fans have shared the band's setlist online, writing that the final song of the night was their song, Slaves And Bulldozers.
