Hamerton Zoo Park evacuated over serious incident, involving tiger and keeper'



A zoo has been evacuated after a ‘serious incident’ that some people have said on social media involves a tiger.

Kevin Fernandez wrote on Facebook that he had run for his life from the Hamerton Zoo Park in Cambridgeshire.

He said that one of the tigers had escaped however police said the incident is not ongoing and members of the public are safe.



Mr Fernandez said: ‘Just been at Hamerton Zoo.. [one] of the tigers escaped.. never run so fast in my life.. they closed the zoo, ambulance turned up I think someone got bitten.’

He later added: ‘We just see everyone runnin  outta the tiger bit n all the staff was shouting run get out .. we had to leave the zoo .. a boy was missing loads of ambulances turned up .. not quite sure what happened one of the tigers got out tho

‘Was more worried about the my two kids .. as we didn’t really know what was going on ..



‘Just wanted to get the kids out of there as .. we didn’t know if the tiger was out and loose .. most people was just running for the exit’

Victoria Northover Holmes, who said she was at the zoo, said: ‘Well we’ve just had to hide thinking a tiger was loose . Something has gone wrong with a keeper and a tiger . Hope things are ok ?’



Paige Dowell added: ‘I’ve just seen everyone was evacuated from hamerton zoo because a tiger was on the loose 😱😱😱 omg!!! I’d have been so scared with the kids!!! I always say just imagine when we go to a zoo 😳’

Reports of a tiger have not yet been confirmed but police said that the incident was no longer ongoing.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: ‘We were called at around 11.15am to reports of a serious incident at Hamerton Zoo Park, Steeple Gidding.



‘Officers attended the scene along with ambulance crews and MAGPAS.

‘We are unable further information available at this time, however, we can confirm that no animals have escaped and members of the public are safe.

‘We will provide a further update when we are able to.
