Floyd Mayweather insists his game plan worked



Floyd Mayweather insisted his gameplan worked to a tee after extending his unbeaten record to 50-0 in the final fight of his career.

Mayweather secured a 10th round stoppage over Conor McGregor after the pair's much anticipated Las Vegas showdown was a far more competitive encounter than many had predicted.

McGregor was on top for the opening three rounds, with the UFC lightweight champion landing several clean shots against the defensive Mayweather.

But former five-weight world champion Mayweather revealed afterwards that he wanted to tire out McGregor early on, before moving into the ascendancy. 



Mayweather said: 'That was my gameplan. My gameplan was to take my time, take all his shots and then take him out at the end - down the stretch.

'Me and my dad talked about it. We wanted him to use the heavy shots in the beginning. In an MMA fight, you have 25 minutes real hard. After 25 minutes, you begin to slow down.'

He added: 'I think we gave the fans everything they wanted to see. He's a lot better than I thought he was.

'He's a tough competitor, but I was the better man today.'

After ending his two-year retirement to extend his unbeaten streak, Mayweather surpasses the great Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.

However, the 40-year-old was adamant afterwards that he won't go back on his plan to hang up his gloves for good now.

'Rocky Marciano was a legend and I just look forward to going in the hall of fame some day,' said Mayweather.

'This was my last fight tonight, for sure. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with.'
