Why you should watch Conor McGregor vs  Floyd Mayweather Jr  without sound



There’s something inherently joyful about listening to Jim Nantz commentate The Masters. There was something other-worldly in Vin Scully’s voice which made Dodgers’ games must-watch television. God knows there wasn’t a thing much more entertaining than listening to Howard Cosell voice the grace of the greatness of Muhammad Ali.



But for all of that greatness tonight’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor fight should be watched without sound.



It’s a bizarre statement, but the fact is this is more than just a fight. It’s a social gathering. It’s an event everyone, boxing fans, MMA fans, even just every-day office workers are going to be talking about come Monday.



This is an event many will have opinions on and there is no better opinion than one that isn’t regurgitated.



Let’s be honest, as amazing as sports broadcasters are they have inherent biases. The same goes for sportswriters, this one included. Writers and broadcasters write and speak with their biases and sports fans often listen to those biases and accept them as fact.



Take the Joe Horn and Manny Pacquiao fight earlier this year. Teddy Atlas decided Pacquiao was going to win that fight before the two fighters stepped into the ring. He said it early, he said it in the middle of the fight, and he said it late. Pacquiao was the winner of that fight and anyone that suggested differently was wrong.



Then when the decision came out everyone freaked out. But go back and watch that fight without sound and see how your opinion changes.



Take an MMA fight for example, too. When Beneil Dariush fought Michael Johnson he won by split decision in a three-round, very technical fight. But Joe Rogan was infuriated and let everyone listening to the broadcast know.



But if you watch that fight without sound you will notice Dariush landing more shots, albeit with less power than Johnson, and at the least earned a split decision even if in a loss. Had you just listened to Rogan, you would have thought Johnson dominated.
