Meghan follows royal traditional as her bridal bouquet is placed on the tomb of the unknown warrior

Meghan Markle followed royal tradition today by having her bridal bouquet placed on the tomb of the unknown warrior at Westminster Abbey.

The idea was started by the Queen Mother in 1923 after she married the Duke of York, who went on to become King George VI.

The Queen Mother is said to have left the flowers at Westminster Abbey in tribute to her brother Fergus, who was killed in 1915 during World War One.

The tradition took place one day after the wedding.

The Duchess of Cambridge honoured the tradition by having her bouquet left on the grave in 2011.

The new Duchess of Sussex paid tribute to Princess Diana at their wedding by having her favourite flowers, forget-me-nots, included in the bridal bouquet.

London-based florist Philippa Craddock designed Meghan's bouquet using locally sourced foliage

She was also responsible for the floral displays for St George's Chapel and St George's Hall.

Meghan made sure to keep other traditional elements in her bouquet.

She had myrtle sprigs from stems planted by Queen Victoria at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight in 1845, included.

Tradition dictates that a royal bride's bouquet contains a sprig of myrtle.

The custom dates back to Queen Victoria's time when the monarch's daughter, Princess Victoria, carried it among her bridal flowers in 1858.

The Duchess of Cambridge, the Queen, and Harry's mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, all had myrtle in their wedding bouquet.

The myrtle for royal bridal bouquets comes from the bush grown from the myrtle originally given to Queen Victoria.

Sprigs taken from a plant grown from the myrtle used in the Queen's wedding bouquet in 1947 were also put in.

The bouquet also contained scented sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine and astrantia.

Lily of the valley represents love and appreciation, while the astilbe shows patience and dedication. Astrantia symbolises strength and courage.
