Meghan Markle news Prince Harry wife broke royal rule Chelsy Davy hug

MEGHAN MARKLE seemed to have no qualms about Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry’s ex girlfriend, attending her royal wedding, and even broke royal protocol when she greeted her. The Duchess of Sussex embraced Chelsy in a “hug”.

Meghan Markle, 36, is said to have broke royal protocol when she came across Prince Harry’s ex girlfriend Chelsy Davy, 32, on the royal wedding day.

The Duchess of Sussex gave Chelsy a hug at the wedding reception, even though "correct" etiquette would be for Chelsy – who does not know Meghan well – to curtsey.

Prince Harry, 33, dated Chelsy for seven years from 2004 to 2011 – after they first met in Cape Town on Harry’s gap year, and she is widely thought to have been his first love.

Meghan Markle chose to leave the traditional “obey” phrase out of her own royal wedding vows to Prince Harry last Saturday.

In doing so, she followed in the footsteps of Kate Middleton, 36, who did the same at her 2011 wedding to Prince William, 35.

Princess Diana, who died at the age of 36, also omitted the “obey” phrase for her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, 69.

The official royal wedding photos of newlyweds Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33 have been released in a series of three pictures.

Meghan and Harry pose alongside the rest of the royal family and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, 61.

A body language expert said two of the three pictures display feminist Meghan in a surprisingly “submissive” stance next to Prince Harry.

Body language expert Judi James analysed the official royal wedding photographs exclusively for Express.co.uk. 

“I’m surprised to see the feminist bride sitting submissively at her new husband's feet in two of the shots,” she commented.

Meghan and Harry will attend their first royal engagement as a married couple later on today.

The married couple – who chose to postpone their honeymoon until later in the summer – will attend Prince Charles’ 70th birthday celebrations at Buckingham Palace.

The event will also be attended by emergency services workers who attended the Manchester Arena bombing one year ago today, to mark the anniversary.

Meghan, who has been given the title of Her Royal Highness Duchess of Sussex, was not fazed by Chelsy’s link to Harry.

She reportedly gave Prince Harry’s ex girlfriend a “hug” when she saw her at the royal wedding reception. Chelsy wore a navy mini dress which showed off her legs for the wedding ceremony at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

This is said to conflict with royal etiquette, whereby commoners – those without a royal title as Meghan now does – are expected to bow or curtsey to royalty.

“Guests reported the former lawyer went up to the bride and was all smiles as she hugged her tightly,” reported The Mirror.

Royal expert William Hanson said this was not technically “correct” etiquette.

"If you are a good friend of anyone after the ceremony a hug is perfectly acceptable," Hanson said in an interview with Personal Space.

“Nobody wants to be hugged before and crease the dress.

"But the correct thing to do was she should have curtseyed for HRH (Her Royal Highness).

You would do a bow or curtsy and greet them more familiar only if you were on those terms."

However, he said Chelsy’s invitation to the wedding speaks for the “character” of Prince Harry.

"Prince Harry clearly still has a relationship with her, even if it is now a platonic relationship.

“That speaks to the character of anybody if they are able to, after a decent break and slight readjustment, still get on with someone who played a major character in their life."

Yesterday, Meghan Markle gave a hint about her relationship with Kate Middleton, her new sister-in-law.

Meghan, who was given the title of Duchess of Sussex last Saturday, is now officially a sister-in-law to Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

But are they friends? While Meghan did not choose Kate to be her maid of honour, opting instead not to have one, it would seem the pair are close.

This was illustrated by Meghan’s decision after her wedding day to gift Kate a gold bracelet – the same style Meghan also gave six of her closest friends.

This gesture, said to be “a token of appreciation”, suggests Kate has entered Meghan’s intimate circle of close friends.

“As a token of her appreciation, Meghan gifted six of her best friends — and new sister-in-law Kate Middleton! — with a solid gold disc bracelet,” reported People magazine
