Casey Affleck hugs Ben as he wins Best Actor at the Oscars/ OSCAR 2017

Casey Affleck won the Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday night in Hollywood and it earned him a huge bear hug from his older brother and fellow Oscar winner Ben.

Casey, 41, beat out Denzel Washington, Ryan Gosling, Andrew Garfield and Viggo Mortensen to take the top prize for his performance in Manchester By The Sea.

After his name was announced, Ben, 44, jumped up from his seat and rushed to embrace his sibling.





Casey appeared genuinely surprised and somewhat overcome by his win.

After taking the stage to receive his Oscar from Brie Larsen, he paused with his hand over his mouth.

'This means so much to me. Dammit,' he began.



He then praised fellow nominee Denzel.

'One of the first people who taught me how to act was Denzel Washington and I just met him tonight,' he said. 'Thank you.'



Casey continued: 'Man, I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say, but I'm just glad to be a part of this community. I'm dumbfounded to be included.'

After thanking his co-stars and director Kenneth Lonergan, he gave a shout out to Matt Damon who was one of the producers of Manchester By The Sea and who had handed Casey the lead role after having to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.

He then finished with a message to his brother: 'Ben, I love you. You ain't heavy.'



Casey had a part in Good Will Hunting that catapulted Ben and pal Matt Damon to the top of the Hollywood heap and earned them a best original screenplay Academy Award in 1998.

He also had parts in other movies where his older brother was the big name including Chasing Amy and Ocean's Eleven and its sequels.

Ben went on to cast him in a leading role in his directorial debut, the 2007 film Gone Baby Gone.

But Casey's Oscar win means he no longer has to live in his more famous brother's shadow.
