It might have been a chilly, grey afternoon, but it was a red hot scene in Hollywood as the stars began to flood the Oscars red carpet.

Amongst the first to arrive was Best Actress nominee Ruth Negga - looking stunning in bright red custom Valentino.

The high-necked, long-sleeved gown might have been conservative, but it was nonetheless glamorous with a long trailing train.

Stopping to chat to E's red carpet host Giuliana Rancic, the Ethiopian-Irish star said of her movie Loving: 'I think there are films that you watch, that you've been in, that stay with you.

'It's gonna stay with me, I feel it.'

On her lapel, she wore a blue ribbon in honour of the American Civil Liberties Union, commonly known as the ACLU.

The biggest names in Hollywood gathered on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday to celebrate another year in showbiz for the Oscars where La La Land has received 14 nominations.

Also wearing red, was the stunning TV personality Kristin Cavallari.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Giuliana Rancic, who is doing interviews on the carpet for E!, looked sensational in her light blue gown that had only one shoulder but made up for it with a flowing train. The mother-of-one had her hair half pulled back with long diamond earrings.

Ranic's gown was from Georges Chakra's 2017 Spring/Summer collection.

She completed the look with Christian Louboutin heels, a sparkly clutch from Judith Lieber.

The wife of Bill Rancic wore a bracelet and earrings by Forevermark.

Fellow E! host Ryan Seacrest - who has a radio show and produced Keeping Up With The Kardashians - looked dapper in a white tuxedo jacket with a black bow tie.

Nighttime talk show funnyman Jimmy Kimmel hosts Hollywood's glitziest ceremony this year with entertainers Justin Timberlake, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John Legend and Sting performing during the night.

The annual awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes excellence in cinematic achievements in the film industry as assessed by the Academy's voting membership.

Romantic showbiz musical La La Land topped the Oscars nominations list with a whopping 14 nods.

The number ties the record set by Titanic and All About Eve and has a chance to beat the record 11 Oscars that have been won by Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Damien Chazelle's whimsical tribute to Hollywood's Golden Age of musicals scored nods for best picture, best director and best lead actor nominations for its two stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Its 10 other nominations came in nine categories.

In second place were sci-fi thriller Arrival and coming-of-age drama Moonlight, tied at eight nominations each.

After last year's #OscarsSoWhite controversy, seven of the 20 actors nominated for awards are non-white.

There was not a single non-white acting nominee in 2016.

Meryl Streep received her record 20th Oscar nomination, 37 years after she was first nominated for her supporting turn in The Deer Hunter.

The 67-year-old actress is up for lead actress for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins.

Also battling it out for best actress alongside Streep and Stone are Natalie Portman for her role in Jackie, Ruth Negga for her critically-lauded performance in Loving, and Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert for French film Elle.

Up for best male lead, Gosling faces off against Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Denzel Washington (Fences), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) and Viggo Mortnensen (Captain Fantastic).

This year's Best Supporting Actress category is lead by past Academy Award winners Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Nicole Kidman (Lion).

They will take on early favorite Viola Davis (Fences) and four-time nominee Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) as well as newcomer Naomie Harris, who received her first ever nomination for Moonlight.

Three of the men competing for Best Supporting Actor received their first nomination, including Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Dev Patel (Lion) and 20-year-old Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), the youngest of this year's acting nominees.

That category is rounded out by past winner Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and past nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals).

Mel Gibson is nominated for best director for Hacksaw Ridge, the first time the actor has been nominated since 1995 when he won the gong for Bravehart back in 1996.

He will be competing against Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), Damien Chazelle (La La Land), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) and Barry Jenkins (Moonlight).
