Ryan Gosling laughs after La La Land Oscars gaffe /OSCAR 2017

It was certainly a crazy, stupid moment.

And Ryan Gosling struggled to stifle his giggles after learning his movie La La Land has lost out on the Best Picture Oscar to Moonlight on Sunday.

His costar Emma Stone, who picked up a best actress gong, meanwhile insisted she 'f***ing loves' the film which had beaten her own to the prestigious title.

The 36-year-old Canadian beefcake was spotted sniggering into his sleeve after discovering he was at the centre of the biggest debacle in Academy Awards history, after Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced the musical was the night's big winner.

In chaotic scenes, the stars and producers of La La Land were stopped midway through their acceptance speeches and forced to hand their trophies to the stars of Moonlight.

Putting on a brave face in the press room afterwards, Emma said: 'I f***ing loved Moonlight. God, I love Moonlight so much! I'm so excited for Moonlight!

'And of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture.

'But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it's one of the best films of all time. So I was pretty beside myself."

In fact the controversy surrounding the best picture announcement could actually be a blessing in disguise for the awards show, which has been suffering from falling ratings in recent years.

The absurd end to the ceremony left the audience gasping in horror as Warren Beatty revealed why he and his Bonnie and Clyde Faye had had incorrectly read La La Land credited as the winner.

The confused 79-year-old blamed the epic mishap on being given the wrong envelope, saying he had seen the name Emma Stone from 'La La Land' when he opened his envelope.

Dick Tracy star Warren said: 'I want to tell you what happened I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land and that is why I took such a long look at Faye and at you.

'I wasn't trying to be funny. This is Moonlight for best picture.'
