Did Leonardo DiCaprio deliberately sabotage the Oscars / OSCAR 2017

It has been described as the biggest mistake in Oscar history, the astonishing moment when they announced the wrong movie for the most coveted award of the night.

Organisers today attempted to explain just how Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the stars of Bonnie and Clyde, managed to read out La La Land when Moonlight had won Best Picture.

But viewers have got their own ideas of what might have happened, with one suggesting that Leonardo DiCaprio was getting his revenge after years of being overlooked.

Many commentators said it was nothing short of a scandal that DiCaprio had not been given an award for one of numerous worthy performances until he finally won Best Actor for his role in the Revenant.

And when one viewer spotted DiCaprio holding the Best Actress envelope that he handed to Emma Stone for La La Land, which preceded Best Picture, she had her suspicions.

Kelly Oxford wrote: 'OMG it was Leo's fault. Leo carried that card offstage, put it down when he saw Warren and Warren picked it up.'

Warren Beatty looked confused as he opened the envelope last night and reading the name La La Land, at which point the stage was flooded with its triumphant actors and producers.

But moments later, they were forced to stop their speeches and hand back their awards as host Jimmy Kimmel announced that there had been a mistake and Moonlight was the winner.

Beatty, who looked embarrassed on stage, explained that he had seen Emma Stone for La La Land on the sheet of paper, which is why he appeared confused before reading out the name.

He said: 'I want to tell you what happened I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land and that is why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny. This is Moonlight for best picture.

But despite his apparent embarrassment, some weren't convinced by the actor's performance, with Matt Buckland writing: 'Bonnie and Clyde's final crime, the old Oscar swicheroo.'

Price Waterhouse Coopers, which tallies up the votes and organises the envelopes, later revealed that every one has a duplicate and the presenters had been given the Best Actress card.

One alternative theory suggested is that it was actually a prank by Matt Damon, who has a long-running fake feud with presenter Jimmy Kimmel and must have plotted to ruin his evening.

Tanner Pearson wrote: 'I'm convinced Matt Damon did it so he has something on @jimmykimmel #AcademyAwards,' after Kimmel mocked the actor during the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Kimmel joked: 'When I first met Matt, I was the fat one. He's a selfish person, but Matt did something very unselfish. He could have starred in Manchester by the Sea... but he gave that role to Casey Affleck.'

He pointed out that Damon went on to star in a 'Chinese ponytail movie instead and that movie went on to lose $80 million. Smooth move dumba**.'

Another suspicious mind suggested that Ryan Gosling, the lead actor in La La Land, switched the envelopes, posting of him whispering what he had done to a fan who is looking horrified.

Hours after the blunder, accounting firm PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, who tally the Oscar results, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a joint statement to apologize for the biggest Oscar screw up in the ceremony's history.

The statement said: 'We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.

'The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

'We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.'

Only two people know the Oscars winners list and supervise the counting procedures - PwC tax adviser Martha Ruiz and Brian Cullinan an accountant who is the chairman of PwC's US board.

Cullinan and Ruiz each carry a suitcase containing a copy of the winning envelope for all the categories - meaning there are two envelopes for each award.

The pair stand on opposite sides backstage and memorize the winners to avoid having to write them down and have revealed in the past how they carry out rigorous checks to ensure they have stuffed the envelopes correctly.

When Beatty and Dunaway took the stage to announce the Best Picture award, Cullinan and Ruiz realized that they still had two best picture envelopes. The best picture envelope for Moonlight hadn't yet been opened.

Executives from PwC immediately realized there was a problem, but they were too late to rectify the mistake as Dunaway read out the name La La Land. An official tried to get on stage to immediately afterwards.
