He was up for the coveted best actor gong.

But at the very least Ryan Gosling secured the unofficial best solo star honours after gracing the Oscars red carpet in a fetching tuxedo in Hollywood on Sunday.

The dashing La La Land star looked every inch the A-lister as he hogged the limelight alone after opting against bringing his long-term lover Eva Mendes as his date.



The 36-year-old Canadian beefcake was in fine form as he opted for a classic look of black tuxedo, frilly shirt, bow tie and shiny leather shoes.

Ryan, who has already won a Golden Globe for his turn as jazz pianist Sebastian in La La Land, certainly had a confident air as he lapped up the attention from the gathered gaggle of photographers.



He hailed his connection with leading lady Emma Stone as he chatted on the red carpet.

Ryan said; 'It’s so much fun working with her. We’ve been really lucky that we were asked to improvise on our first film together, and that’s where we created a connection.



'We’ve been really lucky to work that way.'

The former Mickey Mouse Club mouseketeer has been in a relationship with actress Eva since 2011, and the couple have two daughters together, born in September 2014 and April 2016.

Romantic showbiz musical La La Land topped the Oscars nominations list with an amazing 14 nods.



The number ties the record set by Titanic and All About Eve and has a chance to beat the record 11 Oscars that have been won by Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Its 10 other nominations came in nine categories.

Given how La La Land is not on the same level of brilliance as the other films, it seems rather unlikely to transpire however.

After last year's #OscarsSoWhite controversy, seven of the 20 actors nominated for awards are non-white.
