Mahershala Ali is first ever Muslim to win an acting Oscar

In the first gong of the night, Mahershala Ali has scooped up the Oscar for best supporting actor, making him the first ever Muslim to win an acting award.

The 43-year-old had gained critical acclaim for his role as a drug dealer named Juan, in the drama film, Moonlight.

In the highly anticipated award, Ali beat out A-list actors from the likes of Jeff Bridges, Lucas Hedges, Dev Patel, and Michael Shannon.





The actor had also won a Golden Globe, SAG Award, and Critic's Choice award for best supporting actor.

The Moonlight star became emotional while he thanked his 'wonderful teachers and professors' in his acceptance speech.



'It's not about you, it's about these characters. You are a servant. You're in service to these stories,' he said.

Ali also thanked his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, who gave birth to their first child four days ago.

'I just want to thank her for being a soldier through it all and carrying me through this process,' he added.
