La La Land looks set to dance its way to victory at the biggest night in Hollywood after picking up a record-tying 14 Oscars nominations for the 89th Academy Awards.

The smash-hit musical - led by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling - picked up the most nods on Tuesday, and tied the record set by Titanic and All About Eve.

The picture now has a chance to beat the record 11 Oscars that have been won by Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

And one year after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, seven of the 20 actors nominated for awards were non-white.

There was not a single non-white acting nominee in 2016.

The film's highly-commended stars also head up the Leading Actress and Leading Actor categories, with Emma going to battle with the likes of Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Natalie Portman (Jackie) for the Best Actress prize.

Streep on Tuesday received her record 20th Oscar nomination, 37 years after she was first nominated for her supporting turn in The Deer Hunter.

The other two nominees in the Best Actress category were a bit of a surprise however, taking the spots that many thought would be filled by Annette Bening (20th Century Women) and Amy Adams (Arrival).

Ruth Negga made the cut for her critically-lauded performance in Loving, and Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert was nominated for the French film Elle.

This is the first nomination for Huppert, who has long been considered by many to be one of the greatest actors of all time.

Huppert previously appeared in the 2012 film Amour, which was nominated for Best Picture.

Gosling meanwhile will take on some formidable competition as he faces off against Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Denzel Washington (Fences).

Rounding out the Best Actor category are Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) and Viggo Mortnensen (Captain Fantastic).

That category went exactly the way many predicted, leaving Tom Hanks out of the running for his performance in Sully.

Meanwhile, this year's Best Supporting Actress category is stacked with five of the best actors working in Hollywood, with past Academy Award winners Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Nicole Kidman (Lion) leading the way.

They will take on early favorite Viola Davis (Fences) and four-time nominee Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) as well as newcomer Naomie Harris, who received her first ever nomination for Moonlight.

Three of the men competing for Best Supporting Actor received their first nomination, including Mahershala Ali (Moonlight),  Dev Patel (Lion) and 20-year-old Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), the youngest of this year's acting nominees.

That category is rounded out by past winner Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and past nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals).

Best Director meanwhile provided one big shock with Mel Gibson making his way in for his work on Hacksaw Ridge.

It is the first time he has been nominated since he wont the award for Bravehart back in 1995, a film for which he also took home Best Picture.

This year's nominees were announced by past Oscar winners Brie Larson and Jennifer Hudson and as well as past nominees Glenn Close and Ken Watanabe at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.
