Warren Beatty joins Faye Dunaway after Oscars disaster / OSCAR 2017

They had just announced the wrong Best Picture winner, causing mayhem and confusion at the Oscars.

But Warren Beatty brushed off Faye Dunaway's concerns as the pair made a surprise appearance at the Governors Ball - the official afterparty.

Still clutching the wrong envelope in his hand, 79-year-old Beatty told Faye, 76, they had nothing to be ashamed of.





'Are we in the sink?' she asked him, to which Beatty replied: 'No. It wasn't us.'



Beatty then confided in DailyMail.com about the moment he opened the envelope, while standing on the stage.

Seeing Emma's Stone's name next to the film title, he suspected there had been an error.



'People thought I was being dramatic but I wasn't,' he told DailyMail.com's Baz Bamigboye. 'There was something wrong. I showed it to Faye and she said La La Land.'

Backstage, after the blunder, Beatty said that it was 'one of the strangest things that's ever happened' to him.

'Thank God there were two of us up there,' Dunaway responded.

The actress then asked Beatty, 'Who else should I tell?'



'Everybody,' he said.

At that point, a security guard tried to take the real envelope and Beatty said, 'Security is not getting this. I'm giving it to (Moonlight director) Barry Jenkins at a later time.' Beatty also refused to show it to anyone else.

Hours after the blunder, accounting firm PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, who tally the Oscar results, issued a statement to apologize for the biggest Oscar screw up in the ceremony's history.

The statement said: 'We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.



'The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

'We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.'  

The result was a bizarre scene with the entire cast of both movies standing together on stage exchanging sympathetic awkward stares and hugs.
